2:30 PM to 3:00 PM "Hidden in Plain Bite: The Power of Our Food Choices" by Katie Cantrell, Executive Director of the Factory Farming Awareness Coalition
Kids still grow up singing Old MacDonald, but nowadays 99% of animals are raised on factory farms. This talk gently introduces the idea that our food choices have a powerful impact on the environment, our own health, and our animal friends.

Due to the large number of entries, we would like to setup the presentation/display of all art-works the previous evening Fri, May 31st. Artists do not need to be present during the judging. BALANCE Edutainment: has a children's entertainment franchise called Pacha's Pajamas that engages pre-teens through music and story. The recently released Pacha's Pajamas album is anchored by a powerful and timely story about a little girl whose magical pajamas whisk her away to an imaginary world where she is challenged to discover her inner strength. Through her dream experience, Pacha falls in love with nature and by extension herself, fully realizing her capacity and responsibility to have positive impact on the world. The soundtrack features 55 artists spanning four generations including Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def (Yo Gabba Gabba, The Boondocks, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe), Cheech Marin (The Lion King, Cars, Beverly Hills Chihuahua), Talib Kweli, Majora Carter (Peabody Award winning public-radio series The Promised Land), Lyrics Born, Lester Chambers (The Chambers Brothers), Agape Youth Choir and a dozen youth stars including Lil JaXe and Ta’Kaiya Blaney. Our exhibit will include music, video, and books.


Our City Forest is dedicated to the regeneration and protecting the urban forest. We have a variety of programs that provide San Jose residents with free street, and fruit trees. We also work with local schools to provide students with presentations aimed at educated them on the importance of trees and how to live a green and healthy life. We also have tremendous volunteer opportunities at our nursery, offices and tree planting events.

SRI International- SRI Environmental Science Instructional Solutions (SESIS): This exhibit will showcase a website that kids and teachers can visit to investigate real data from satellites and models about the environment, both globally and in any region of the world of the world. The website is a product of the NASA- funded project called Data Enhanced Investigations for Climate Change Education (DICCE). This free and publicly available website contains a series of supportive documents and resources that explain how to create maps and time series plots about the different Earth variables available through the site and how to interpret the data on those maps and plots for signs of climate change. . Variables include carbon dioxide, temperature, rain, snow, ocean surface clarity, sea surface temperatures, incoming and outgoing radiation, land greenness, ozone, and particulate matter. . DICCE makes everybody feel like an environmental data detective, uncovering meaning from mystery.

Santa Clara County Activists for Animals is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to reducing and eliminating the suffering of animals and to raising community awareness of animal issues. We are motivated by compassion to prevent cruelty to all animals, especially those used for food, clothing, and entertainment. Our exhibit will have games for children that focus on animals and literature for parents to take home so that the whole family can learn more about how their food choices affect our communities' health and the planet.

Visual Cue Thermal Imaging Visual Cue Thermal Imaging: Seeing is believing when it comes to locating your home's energy leaks, and infrared shows you in amazing detail. Visual Cue's exhibit has been wildly popular with students in third- and fourth-grade classrooms at Juana Briones School in Palo Alto. The exhibit includes an infrared thermal imager on a tripod, and a 21" monitor running a PowerPoint loop. The loop shows picture-in-picture infrared images of home energy leaks, and explains why we're interested in stopping them. The informational slides are interspersed with photos of orangutans in cute poses, making funny faces. I use the imager to show children how strange things around them look when viewed in the infrared spectrum, and answer their questions.

Senergy Efficiency: We are an energy consulting firm located in the South Bay. We perform home energy assessments and provide home owners with a detailed report on how they can make there homes more energy efficient. We also perform all the upgrades needed to make the home more energy efficient. We are also a participating contractor in the Energy Upgrade California program that is run by PG&E.

DezignKidz provides innovative design programs for kids ages 7-14 in fashion & accessory design, interior design, textile design, sewing and other textile arts. Students express themselves through the medium of fabric, while gaining valuable practical and problem-solving skills. DezignKidz programs encourage true “design thinking” as students learn how to take a project from a sketch to a completed product. An emphasis is placed on creative use of materials, including recycling and repurposing whenever possible.

FabMo annually rescues over 50 tons of discontinued interior design materials and makes them available for creative reuse by all interested people. We encourage them to up-cycle and repurpose these FabMo items into new, beautiful and useful creations. We celebrate our crafters and their creations with an annual FabMo Textile Art Boutique at Quadrus Conference Center in Menlo Park (Oct. 27). We also offer workshops open to the public. Our booth will provide information about what FabMo does and why we do it. We will show some unique examples of things people have made from FabMo treasures.
